snorkeling with 11th graders

The snorkel trip with the 11th grade Environmental Science class was pretty hilarious.  I was actually pretty nervous beforehand, I mean, What if they didn't like me?  Or what if they had laughed at my awesome black one-piece bathing suit?  Or what if one of them had drowned on my watch?  It turned out to be a lot of fun, though, and I really hope I get invited to go back out with them.  There were a handful of kids that had never been in the sea before (though they have lived their entire 16-year-long-lives just several hundred meters from the coast).  I helped out a group of girls place quadrats and count corals which resulted in a lot of sand being stirred up and numerous corals being stepped on while the girls kept their balance... but they did mange to collect some "data" and more importantly, they now are curious about the sea :)

  3. I don't think you ever need to worry what 11th graders will think of you. You are a cool scientist doing cool things and helping them do cool things. What isn't to love about that. See you soon!!! Hugs, AC

  5. Please tell me that at least one student had a little freak out when they put the mask on. Am I totally alone on this?

    1. yes, there was a lot of chaos! We did some classroom prep before we went out to the sea and the kids did really well with this, and then they got the fins and mask and everything went a bit messy, but it was fun!
