06 August 2013

In these parts, August is the end.  The end of childish, flamboyant summer with all of it is carefree days, too-ripe fruits, and tantalizing blooms.  While the petunias have almost dried up and the vines give us the last of their delicious enticements, we know that autumn will soon be upon us and the cold will follow.  Our days of sipping lemonades in the sunshine and flip-flopping to the market are limited.  Soon we will have eaten the last of the tomatoes, wondering how we could have ever thought we had too many.  The bright colors of summer, pinks and reds, sungold, daisy yellow and cherokee purple, will seem a distant dream when the leaves start to fall and then the world turns to snowy white.

August can be a difficult month for some when summer never seems to last as long as we would have liked.  For the child in all of us, we yearn to hold the sands of summer in the palms of our hands, yet the  tighter we grasp, the faster it trickles through our fingers.  If only we can get a bit more rain, maybe it will stay green?  The leaves fallen to the ground were just blown from the wind, they haven't started to drop on their own.  That breeze we feel can't be cooler than yesterday, can it?  We can deny that the season of change will soon be upon us but that will not stop it from coming.  That will not prepare us for the winter, when the ground turns to ice and all that can be gleaned from our soils are half-frozen roots.

All that we can do, is accept each season as it comes.  While we will miss a cool cucumber and summer squash, we will have pumpkins-a-plenty and roasted turkeys for all.  There will be hot apple cider, and chili with noodles, and so many pies.  At times, the cold can be lonely.  When we fear to leave the warm safety of our homes.  But in these seasons there are also celebrations.  Celebrations of love and togetherness to help us get through.

Before we know it, again Spring will be knocking on our door.  Rushing in with everything green and magnificent.  A fresh start again.

    1. Maybe we can all learn something from August. And you dear sister are an August baby. Part Summer part Autumn, born in the season of change. Embrace it and you will be magnificent.

  3. This is making me sad! August is the month when summer truly shines in the PNW. (September is pretty good too... ) I mean, most of our tomatoes are still green!
