day one at dusk

Rome is most beautiful in the evening.  The sun starts to set and the entire city turns to gold.  The light bounces off the red and orange buildings creating a warm glow.  Seabirds soar overhead and even in the winter, you feel like you have been transported to a tropical island or perhaps a recovered Atlantis.

At the end of our first full day in Rome, we wandered around the city center to find a late lunch before visiting the Roman Forum.  We were afraid we wouldn't make it in before they closed but we got there just in time.  To catch the sunset.  We loved the Roman Forum, perhaps even more than the Colosseum, because it almost felt deserted.  We were able to explore among the ruins without crowds of people.  The Forum is mysterious with twisting pathways leading to hidden fountains and parks are strewn in amongst crumbling pillars.
